Mindful eating places awareness, whenever and whatever we eat. As well as making us watchful about what we eat, it aims to transform our relationship with food by focusing on the how and why of eating, encouraging a more holistic point of view.
Taking a piece of chocolate, sweet or food of your choice, observe it as if it was the first time you have seen such a thing
Looking at what is in your hand and noticing what you observe about it? What does it feel like? What is the texture like? What is the weight like in your hand?
Slowly unwrap the food, listen to the sound the wrapping makes as you take the food out of the packaging. Concentrate on what unwrapping the food feels like. Where does that packaging come from? Think of the people involved in making the packaging
As you are holding the unwrapped food, consider where it comes from. Considering that in this food there is water, sunlight wherever this food came from it is truly a miracle. Think of all the things that had to come together in order to create this food. Think of all the people who brought this to you, consider all of that and sit with it for a moment
Taste the food, go slowly, hold it in your mouth for a while and feel the sensation. If you have chocolate, take a bite. What does that feel like on your tongue. Savour the experience. Bring your attention to your jaw and your mouth. Let the sweet or chocolate rest there for a while. Focus on the tastes you are getting. Notice all the sensations you are experiencing when you’re eating
If during the experience you become distracted, notice those other thoughts for a while, let them come into your mind then get back to the experience of eating. As you are eating, what is your mind doing? Are you wanting to rush the experience? Are you impatient or are you feeling more at peace? Applying these mindfulness techniques can help us reduce stress and calm anxiety.
Engaging with the above exercise might not always be practical in the busy lifestyles we lead. Here are a few ways to practice mindful eating in everyday life.
